General Motors Africa & Middle East announces executive leadership changes

To continue to drive transformation and success in our region, we are pleased to announce the following organizational change to the position of Managing Director, GM Egypt and North Africa, effective August 1:

Tarek Atta will remain as Chair of the Board of Directors of GM Egypt and North Africa, and in addition he will assume a new senior strategic role overseeing the ‘Egypt Electrification Project’, which will seize on the opportunity for GM to become the EV market leader in Egypt by proactively engaging with the government, external and internal stakeholders to take our business forward.

Tarek joined GM Egypt upon its establishment in August 1984 as a process engineer, going on to hold various assignments across the organization, including Manufacturing, Product Planning, Global Purchasing and Supply Chain, Engineering and Program Management. He supported the launch of several products while expanding GM’s manufacturing capability in Egypt.

In 2001, Tarek became GM Egypt’s Director of Manufacturing, Engineering, Product Planning and Program Management. Tarek took over as Director of Sales, Marketing and Aftersales at GM Egypt in January 2010 and served as GM North Africa Vice President of Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing in 2012.

In 2013 Tarek was appointed Managing Director of GM Egypt and North Africa and has played a crucial role in GM Egypt’s market-leading success over many years and we look forward to the leadership Tarek will bring to the strategic Egypt Electrification Project.

Tarek holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering with highest honors from Saudi Arabia’s King Abdul Azeez University.

Sharon Nishi, currently Chief Marketing Officer GM Middle East, is appointed to the role of Managing Director, GM Egypt and North Africa, replacing Tarek Atta.   

A strong strategic thinker with 35 years of experience in the automotive industry across the world, Sharon is a collaborative leader committed to building and developing diverse and high-performing teams. Known to challenge the status quo and stimulate positive change, Sharon has a proven ability to work seamlessly across diverse cultures and markets, leading teams that produce results.

Sharon has a vast background spanning marketing, sales and leadership roles across the globe.  She began her career with GM Canada in 1986 in field sales and service.  Sharon has gone on to hold various positions of increasing responsibility in GM Canada, including Regional Marketing Manager, Segment Brand Manager and Regional Director.

Sharon also has extensive international experience including Regional Marketing, Network Development and Sales Operations Manager, GM Asia Pacific Operations; Regional Sales and Marketing Director for GM Latin America, Africa and Middle East Region; Regional Marketing Director, GM International Operations and General Director for Chevrolet in China at SGM.

Sharon will transition roles with Tarek throughout July ahead of an August 1 start date and will relocate to Cairo in the third quarter of 2022. Sharon’s replacement as CMO will be announced at a later date.
